Can
my FWS award be used for on-campus
and off-campus jobs?
Yes, your FWS award may be used
for an on-campus or off-campus
job.
Are these jobs only available
to students who have been given
FWS awards?
These jobs are only available to
students who have FWS awards. If
you would like a job and do not
have a FWS award, click
here for part-time student job
listings (non-FWS jobs).
How many jobs can I have during
the year?
Students may only hold one (1)
work-study position at a time.
While you are free to change positions,
you must first resign from your
current position before starting
another FWS position.
Will I be placed into a position?
No, we have developed an “open-market” system
where students have the ability
to apply to and interview for the
positions of their choice. How can I get help creating or
updating my resume?
The Career Center offers resume
assistance as well as other services.

Center website. By what date must I obtain a FWS
job?
Students with work-study awards
must be hired by October 15 (fall)
and February 15 (spring) in order
to retain their awards. If you
are not hired by this date, your
award is subject to cancellation
or reduction. If you are unable
to work during the fall semester
due to course load, class schedule,
study abroad, or other reasons,
you may request a spring only award
for the Office of Financial Aid.
When can I start my work-study
job?
You may begin working when your
Federal Work Study award has been
finalized and you have completed
the necessary forms in Human Resources
and with the hiring department.
How many hours can I work?
FWS students are limited to 20hrs
per week maximum.
Where can I find more information
on off-campus tutoring with the
Community Service Office?
The D.C. Reads Coordinator can
help you find an off-campus tutor
site and provide you with the necessary
training. The phone number is (202)

are located in Mary Graydon Center,
Room 273.

You will be paid on a bi-weekly
basis (on Fridays).
How will I receive my paycheck?
Paychecks are mailed to the department
where you work. We strongly recommend
electing direct deposit into
any checking, savings, or EagleBucks
account of your choice.
What paperwork will Human Resources
need from me?
To get paid you need to complete
the following forms:
•
I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification
•
Federal Tax Form (W-4 Form)
•
State tax forms (DC, Maryland,
or Virginia – based on your
in-session address)
•
District of Columbia Work Permit.
This permit is required if you
are under age 18. (You will need
to bring your Social Security Card
AND Birth Certificate to obtain
a DC work Permit.)
Can I claim exempt on my tax forms
since I am a student?
You cannot claim exemption from
withholding if (1) your income
exceeds $700 and include more than
$250 of unearned income (e.g. interest
and dividends) and (2) another
person can claim you as a dependent
on their tax return. For further
clarification, please consult a
tax advisor.
Where is the Human Resources Office
located?
Human Resources is located at 3201
New Mexico Avenue, Suite 350. The
office suite is above Balducci's
and Chef Geoff's.
Do I have to keep the same job
all year?
The Federal Work-Study Program
has an employment at will relationship,
you or you supervisor may terminate
your employment at anytime.
